The Aero Weapons Platoon

Huey Cobra (AH-1G) Gunships

The aero weapons, or Red platoon, was made up of Huey Cobra (AH-1G) gunships. Armed with rockets, mini guns and grenade launchers, the Red gunships join the White LOH to form the Pink team, the basic working unit of the 1st Squadron, 9th Cav. The gunship protects the LOH and can immediately attack a target.

The COBRA is not an UH1B – – – The COBRA is an AH-1G. A UH-1B is a Huey Gunship with door gunners, crew of 4. I am Qualified in the AH-1G; AH-1Q; AH-1J; AH-1S; AH-1SMOD; and the AH-1SPROD. Each has a crew of 2. Controls in the front seat and back seat. Flex turret, and rockets can be fired from the front seat; Stowed turret and rockets can be fired from the back seat. PIC {Pilot In Command} in the back seat; i.e., AC {Aircraft Commander}.

FYI, the Original, World-Famous “Cobra’s” were flown by the so-named Gun Platoon of the 114th AML Co flying UH-1B gunships out of Vihn Long in the Mekong in ’63-67. This was before the build-up of 1966. The Original “Cobra” was a UH-1B. Their combat exploits and elite status were legendary across the Army Aviation community at the time. The follow-on, Army-wide AH-1 one-design gunship was named “Cobra” by 114th partisans as a tribute to the original elite UH-1B Cobra gun platoon which pioneered the US Army helicopter Gunship concept, weaponry, tactics etc. They were Cobra before Cobras were cool…

Another good book on this topic and it includes some “Blues” operations is “Low Level Hell” penned by a loach pilot that flew scout/pink team missions.
